SIEM REAP 006 – FULL DAY TOUR – SARUS
Quite possibly the most exciting tour you will have in Siem Reap. Cruise on our luxurious colonial style cruiser across Tonle Sap Lake to the lakeside village of Kompong Phhluk, visit a local family, be blessed by monk….take lunch out in the open air, before visiting one of Cambodian’s most intriguing temples “the Lost Temple” of Beng Melea.
Depart hotel 08:00. Leave Siem Reap for Chhong kneas, a trading port of agriculture products, which offers a different view of rural life in Cambodia. Board the Sarus, a traditional wooden boat, and embark on a Tonle Sap Kake adventure to discover the floating villages and some unique wildlife along the way. Arrive at Kompong Phhluk village, which is a stilted village spread pout in a flooded forest. Disemark at one of the silted houses and meet the local family. Sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with the family and learn more about their lifestyle. Board a smaller rowing boat with a local who shows you around the fooded forest. Take in some of the most extraordinary scenery on the lake before returning to the Sarus for a transfer through the village towards the port. A private vehicle a waits you to take you to your lunch stop (this may be a picnic lunch or lunch in a homestay).
After lunch continue by car to Beng Melea, a sprawling jungle temple constructed in a distinctly Angkor Wat style by King Suyavarman II iun the early 12th century. It preceded and may have served as a prototype for Angkor Wat. Contrary to Angkor, few carving or base-reliefs are evident. Today the temple is largely overrun by vegetation and the stone walls are crumbling which adds to its charm in a unique way. In recent years accessibility has improved as elevated walkways have been set up throughout most of the temple, although to see every nook and cranny does require a sense of adventure as you will need to climb over stone blocks or walk through narrow passageways.
The return journey by car to is pleasant drive of about 1.5 hours through the Cambodian countryside.
